In my work I look to explore the delicate beauty that can be found in the natural environment. My love of travel and sense of curiousity are my source of inspiration. I usually begin with a photograph that I have taken to begin developing ideas for a painting. I often use the bird’s eye perspective with my landscapes. It is important for me to capture a feeling or memory. I primarily work with Encaustic on wood panels. The elements of history,anthropology, and sociology are issues that fuel my emotional landscapes.

Abbey Messmer
Messmer, a transplanted Texan, works out of Lucky Rabbit Studio in downtown Phoenix. In her latest work- sea life, plants and microbiotic creatures slink around in half-terrestrial, half-aquatic dreamscapes. Messmer is inspired and influenced by photography, scientific diagrams, evolution, surrealism, mystery, mutation and fiction, as well as artists like Gottfried Helnwein, Francis Bacon, Don Suggs, Chris Rush, Henry Darger, Mark Mothersbaugh, Diane Arbus and Tiffany Bozic.
